Umtanum Camp Out
Hosted by Eastern Washington Adventures
Report and photos by Clay Graham & Kevin Elliott/ Selah Sweets

On Saturday March 18th, 2017, we headed up the Yakima River Canyon to meet up with others at the Umtanum Recreation Area to camp and do some hiking.

My boys started off by building a fire and starting dinner. TJ40 and Avalanche pulled in shortly after.

We decide to take shifts watching dinner. With the two-way radios, we our cooks and hikers could keep in touch.

The first hike we headed across the cable bridge over the Yakima River and then under the train tracks to get to the Umtanum Creek Trail. The beginning of the trail was under water from the Umtanum Creek over flowing. The creak was dumping mud into the Yakima River.

We headed back over the cable bridge and went up to a view point to see what was there. There was a sign to read which is posted in a photo in this report.

Next we followed a trail sign that took you into what looking like an old road with campsite on the river. We walked down the river to below the trailer parking lot and back to camp.

TJ40, Bubz and I stayed at camp, and Doc, Odo and Avalanche hiked to the top of the ridge and back down a steep trail to the bottom. We talked to them on the radio making sure they were ok.

After everyone was back at camp, we had the dinner the boys cooked over the fire. It was pretty good.

We stood around the campfire into the night until we were real cold from the wind. We sat in TJ40’s camper with the heater on for awhile, and my three sons watched a movie in the camper van. Then it was off to bed.

The next morning, Bubz made breakfast and TJ40 played with his drone.

We had a very fun time at the Umtanum Recreation Area.

Checkout time was 11 AM, so we headed out south through the Yakima River Canyon making another stop at the Selah Creek Trail for a hike. Those photos will be posted on the next report.

Umtanum Creek Canyon Hike
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures / Selah Adventures – Selah Community & Tourism.

On Sunday March 29th, 2015 Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 headed north up the Yakima River Canyon and met up at Umtanum Recreation Area to do a hike up Umtanum Creek Canyon.

It was a very nice day for the hike. We took our time and made our way up to the beaver dams and back.

On the way we had to take a different path to cross the creek since the logs were gone where we had crossed in the past. This new to us trail had parts if a foundation from maybe a house. The concrete walk was dated Nov 1933. There were stairs going into the ground too.

After the hike we had a picnic. The Scouts and families cooked hotdogs over a campfire.

After the picnic, the Cub Scouts put the fire out and picked up the area.

This was a very fun thanks to all who came.

3rd Annual “Go Play Topless” Weekend
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On the weekend of September 12th-14th, 2014 Eastern Washington Adventures held the 3rd Annual Go Play Topless Weekend at their location in Selah, Washington. This year the event was sponsored by Pegasus Northwest and Selah Adventures.

Friday people came and set up camp at Eastern Washington Adventures. They gathered around the patio warming fire to visit.

Saturday morning the sun was shining bright. It was a nice day. Free coffee was severed in the EWA Club House.

Around 10 AM the group headed out for the run with four Jeeps. We convoyed over to I-82 for some supplies and then through the Yakima River Canyon. At the Ellensburg side we stopped at Helen McCabe State Park for a break. After the break we headed into Ellensburg to take Umtanum Road to the Wenas Wildlife area. At Durr Road we aired down and then continued up Wenas Pass. We turned off Wenas Pass onto Hanson Pond Road and took it up to the Manastash Ridge Observatory where we stopped for lunch.

After lunch we headed down Observatory Road, onto Mud Flat Road and out Audubon Road to North Wenas Road. We ran North Wenas Road just a little ways and turned up Ridge Road. We ran Ridge Road on up to the top of Umtanum Ridge and took a break to look back across at the Manastash Ridge Observatory. From there we ran the top of the ridge across to Bel Tel Road with one loop down Black Canyon on the way. On Bel Tel Road we headed to the bottom and out Sheep Company Road and back to the EWA Club House.

Back at the EWA Club House we had a potluck dinner and enjoyed sitting around the fire in the Biergarten.

Sunday morning there was a potluck breakfast. People then packed up and headed for home.

Thank you to all who came. Thank you to Pegasus Northwest for sponsoring this year’s “Go Play Topless” event.

On the weekend after Labor Day (September 6th-8th, 2013) Eastern Washington Adventures held the 2nd Annual Go Play Topless Weekend at their location in Selah, Washington. This year the event was sponsored by Pegasus Northwest.

Friday people came and set up camp at Eastern Washington Adventures. Everyone gathered at the EWA Club House to get to know each other.

Saturday morning the sun was shining. We had coffee at the club house and some played on the RTI ramp. Around 10 AM we headed out for the run with seven Jeeps. The clouds came in not long after we pulled out. We convoyed through the Yakima River Canyon and then across the Wenas Wildlife area with a few stops along the way. We lucked out and the rain held off.

Saturday evening back at the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House there was a potluck dinner and a get together.

Sunday morning there was a potluck breakfast. People then packed up and headed for home. The weather was great all day and would have been a better day to Go Play Topless.

Over all this years Go Play Topless event went well and people seemed to have fun. It sounds like most want to do it again next year.
