Top Member Challenge
Report by Clay Graham. Photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On Saturday March 1st, 2014 Eastern Washington Adventures members met up at Curly’s II in Kittitas, Washington for the annual Eastern Washington Adventures Top Member Challenge.

We lined up in Kittitas and headed to Colockum Road for the Eastern Washington Adventures Top Member Challenge. We hit snow low on Colockum Road. The road got slick once we got into the trees. We stopped and to air down before the climb up the ridge.

We aired down and headed up to find a good starting point. There was a few rigs that got stuck on the way up. We started the Eastern Washington Adventures Top Member Challenge on top of the ridge at the first power lines. The challenge was the first one to the Halfway Station Marker or 3PM which ever came first.

We lined up the challenge member rigs. In the front row was; DClack – Early Bronco, Foxracer – TJ, Jeepscum – TJ, TJ40 – TJ. Behind them was Guido – TJ and Icesis – JK. The judge rigs were Ceg & riding with Icesis, AlwayswrenchN – YJ and NickB – Toyota and co-pilot Ruger SR5.

There was a lot of stucks along the way. Only rigs competing could help each other out and being good sports they did. Some rigs got disqualified since the judge rigs helped them out. They still pushed on for the fun.

We hit a deep power snow drift just past the Powerline Road. All the rigs fought the drift. TJ40 was the first to get on top after airing down a few times more. Foxracer was the second rig up but could not reach TJ40 that was far ahead in time. The time was called at 3 PM and the 2014 Eastern Washington Top Member was TJ40.

We all turned around to head back out. It took awhile to get back out since there was a few stucks and DClack popped a tire bead.

Around 7:15 PM we met back up at Curly’s II in Kittitas for dinner.

This was a very fun day thanks to who all came.

New Years Quilomene 4×4 & Hiking Adventure
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On January 1st, 2014 Eastern Washington Adventures members met up at Curly’s II in Kittitas, Washington for the New Years Day Adventure. Kyle was our leader since he was the only one that had been through the whole route we were looking to do.

Around 10 AM we headed out from Kittitas with six Jeeps and one Early Bronco. We ran Vantage Highway and turned up Parke Creek. We stopped to air down in a parking area before heading up Parke Creek Canyon.

Shortly we were on our way. We drove Parke Creek Road to the top of the ridge, turned south and took a break on Quilomene Ridge Road.

Next we continued on Quilomene Ridge Road and made our way down to Quilomene Bay on the Columbia River across from the Gorge Amphitheater. About half the group hiked out to the Sand Dune along the Columbia River. The hiking trail was real bad in a few areas where it would have been easy to fall down the hill into Quilomene Bay. Out in the sand area views where great. We walk the beach around the sand dune and then hiked back to the Jeeps. Back at the parking area the rest of the group had been watching the Long Horn Sheep up the side of the hill. We stopped below the sheep for a few photo before heading back up on Quilomene Ridge.

We back tracked our route and continued past Parke Creek Road we had came up earlier. We drove on top of the ridge to Colockum Road. On the way there we past a lot of Side-by-sides and ATVs then a big herd of elk crossing in front of our Seven 4 Wheel Drive rigs.

We aired up at the bottom of Colockum Road then headed to Curly’s II in Kittitas for dinner.

This was a great time thanks to all who came.

This drive was educational in a few ways. The main one being the drive a long the Green Dot Roads proved that ORVs and wildlife can be in the same area. Don’t buy into Wildlife Season Closures on the Green Dot Systems. This is our land too! These road are also miles apart where the wildlife could get away from people if they choose to. On this day they wanted to hang out with us!

Quartz Mountain Backroads Run
Hosted by Eastern Washington Off Road, called by Ron the Parts Guy.
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Off Road

On Saturday November 7th, 2009 Eastern Washington Off Road members met up at the Ellensburg McDonald’s for a backroads run up to Quarts Mountain call by “Ron the Parts Guy”.

Around 10 AM started the convoy towards Quartz Mountain with 11 rigs.

A few miles up the road we have to stop because two rigs had problems. eburgwheeler’s XJs Dana 30 was not working because of the disco. He turned around for home. JDavis had a shock come loose on his Montero. He worked on it as the kids played.

Quartz Mountain

That was the start of the road being real icy. Some hunters in a FS Chevy pickup were coming down the hill and not wanting to slow down for us to get by. The last few rigs were off to the side to let him by. I was in the way and could move up the hill because I stopped in the ice. I jumped out to air down and one of the old guy in the pickup walks over and ask where I thought I was going. I told him Quartz Mountain. He told me that none of us had any business up their without chains. Then he tells me my rig should not be up there at all. He went on nagging about me as I aired down. I did not say anything else to him because it would not have been very nice. I was able to move a little better after letting air out but not enough to get started on the icy climb. Jerry got in front of me and pulled the Sami up the hill.

Here we stopped to air down more as the rest of the group climbed the hill.
Quartz Mountain

Roller-Bear had to head back home. He stopped on the way down to say good bye.
Quartz Mountain

By the sounds of it on the CB the Broncos had a hard time making the climb because of the ice. My wife was not wanting to go up if it was real bad. She said we were in the wrong rig. I agreed. ricky8587 and Blind-Pilot went for it as Jerry and us stayed back. Once those guys made it without any problems and told us this on the radio, we headed up too. It was slick and the Sami kicked out sideways twice on the way up. I was able to steer out of it both times without stopping.

Here is coming up to Quartz Mt. Campground.
Quartz Mountain

Quartz Mountain

I just about made it up on top of Quartz Mt. but the Sami started sliding backwards toward a drop off. I stopped to let the wife calm her nerves and to take a picture of the snow blown on the trees.

The wife said she was ready to get off this hill climb so we got turned around to head to a safer place.

On the way we found Bronco-in-Training and kids walking up the road.

Time to head down. Our Trail Boss “Ron the Parts Guy” leading the way.

Quartz Mountain

Quartz Mountain

We past a pickup that was going up. The group stopped for him but the guy told us he would wait there for us to pass. We all pulled back on the road and headed down. Some how the two FS broncos got sideways in the road and Blind-Pilot ran his TJ into the side of one of them. I believe everyone is alright. “Ron the Parts Guy” went back up to help as the rest of us found a safe place to get out of the road.
Quartz Mountain

An Explorer was on the way up and we stopped them to tell them about the road being blocked on the climb. He was turning around when a guy in a FJ Cruiser came flying around the corner. The FJ Cruiser slid to a stop a few feet from hitting the Explorer. The FJ Cruiser backed up real fast and went back down the road. “Ron the Parts Guy” winched the guys out and were coming down.

Then here comes this Black jacked up Chevy pickup coming down the mountain from the direction “Ron the Parts Guy” stuck group was. The Chevy guy romped on the throttle as he came by the Explorer and the two guys that were out helping to get the Explorer turned around. That was enough for us. We moved down the road to get away from getting hit. We stopped at the Shoestring Trail Head. I drove my wife over to the outhouse. It was closest to being a drive through I have ever seen. LOL
Quartz Mountain

Waiting for the others.

Here is the damage from the accident.

After we all were regrouped we headed out.
We stopped at the pavement to air up for home.

This was a very fun run thanks to all who came. Sorry that some received carnage.

Pine Mountain New Year 4×4 Snow Run
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On Thursday January 1st, 2009 we meet up in Tampico for our New Years Run.
This year again BSLM let us come up to his private land on Pine Mountain at the Ahtanum State Forest.

We aired down at Nasty Creek Corrals.

With Roger in the lead with BSLM as co-pilot.

We were not far onto the private land when Roger had to air down even more to get through.

This picture was taken right before I got stuck in Roger’s holes.

Test Dummy pulled my XJ out and got in front of me since his XJ is locked on both ends and taller off the ground.

We had to wait for Roger to plow through the snow drifts.

Test Dummy got stuck in one of the deep drifts and had to winch out.

I made it through with speed. Tiny got stuck in it.

Test Dummy got stuck in the next drift. Roger came back to see.

After talking with BSLM, Test Dummy aired down to 2 psi.

The Tampico boys dug Tiny’s XJ out.

I think Test Dummy was able to drive out. He came back to pull my XJ through.

Then he pulled Tiny’s XJ through the same area.

Regrouping and playing around.

Tiny letting more air out.

Moving up the trail.

The next stop was at BSLM’s cabin.

On the trail again.

Hercules drove off the trail.

Nevada pulled him through the deep snow.

Moving again.

Hercules having a hard time making it up the climb. Trying it backwards.

Some of us that were up the hill circled back down to the group so we could go on a recovery mission.

We regrouped and headed down the mountain.
A lady’s car was stuck some where down there.

Waiting on the others to make the last hill climb up.

We made it down to the car.

We got the car out and were on our way back up the mountain.

Nevada wondering how Ron (4wheelingplus.com) got into my XJ since he didn’t fit in there well.

Nevada towing TJ40’s rig up the hill.

Regrouping.

The next area was a lot of fun.
I came very close to smacking a few trees with my 99 XJ as I crab walked along the hill side.
I could not make the turn up the hill so I had to spin the rear down hill so I could hit the climb straight on.
That work well. Will a few runs and RPMs we made it up. Here’s Roger on the top.

The rest of the group took another route to the top.

Blind-Pilot having fun.

TJ40 winching up.

Regrouping again.

As you can see, Ron (4wheelingplus.com) does not fit to well in my XJ.

Heading out.

This was another great New Years Run thanks to all that came.
