Hello. I am the co-owner of Selah Sweets. I ran across this old report I did years back, on one of my other web sites that does not work any longer. I thought I would share photos of my time in Germany with you.
Thanks for reading,
Time spent in Germany in the U.S. Army By Clay Graham
I spent 4 years (1982-1986) in the U.S. Army. My MOS was 63B (Light Wheel Vehicle & Generator Mechanic). I worked TAMMS/PLL part of that time in the Engineers Section and later the Motor Pool.
Over three of the years I was stationed at Mc Pheeters Barracks in Bad Hersfeld Germany in a Air Defense Artillery Battery which watched over the East German boarder. The Tac-site was on the top of a mountain in Schwarzenborn, Germany ( 50.927093, 9.499215 ). My unit was deactivated in 1986 since the Hawk Air Defense System was replaced with the Patriot.
On Saturday September 19th, 2015 at Carlon Park, there was the annual Army Base Race 1/2 Marathon and 5k put on by the City of Selah Parks & Recreation and Yakima Training Center. The race distances were ½ Marathon (13.1 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles). This event happens on the 3rd Saturday in September of each year while the Japanese Army is at the Yakima Training Center for training.
Many people of the Japanese Army along with the U.S. Army and civilians did the race which ran from Carlon Park to the Army Base and back.
Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 keep the area cleaned up and the Japanese Soldiers had fun taking photos with them.
There were some fun things at the race. The Army had two trucks, a bomb suit and robot to look at. There were inflatables for the children to play in. The Army set off a canon and a helicopter came over at the start of both races.
The Army Base Race is our annual 1/2 Marathon and 5k. This event happens on the 3rd Saturday in September.
With over 500 runners you are sure to compete with somebody and test your endurance. The race distances are ½ Marathon (13.1 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles). We will also have a free kid’s run at 10:00am around Carlon Park. Winners will receive trophies as well as their participation medals.
All participants will receive dog tags upon completion of the race as well as shirt and race bag! Register by September 1st to guarantee your shirt size. No shirts will be guaranteed after September 1st.
We will be using a chip timing system again this year to ensure accurate results as you cross the finish line. Last year the winning time was 1 hour 17 minutes… Do you have it in you to beat that time? The Japanese Army does and they will again be participating in this event, come help us bring the gold back to Selah!
