Cleman Mountain Halloween
Backroads 4×4 Adventure

Report and photos by Clay & Doc Graham / Selah Sweets

On Saturday October 28th, 2017 around 10 AM outdoor enthusiasts met up at the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House in Selah, Washington for the “Halloween Backroads 4×4 Adventure”. We convoyed to the Upper Wenas part of the Wenas Wildlife Area for a backroads run up Cleman Mountain.

We aired down at the Hay barn off North Wenas Road and headed up W1100. At the top of Cleman Mountain we ran the the ridge Southeast to the end of the Green Dot where we stopped for lunch.

After lunch we back tracked past where we came up and ran the top of Cleman Mountain Northwest. We continued into the Naches Ranger District onto FS1712 and ran it to FS1701 (Bald Mountain Rd.). At FS1701 we took a break and said goodby to the people in tow of the rigs that had to head back over to Western Washington for work.

We turn up FS1701, took FS1716 and then turn on Hog Ranch Road to go back toward North Wenas Road. We aired up at the parking area off Maloy Road. Most people headed back home and a few came to the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House.

This backroads run was fun. The views were great even though it was a little hazy at times in the distance.

Back at the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House we had a potluck and Halloween Party. Some of the kids played in the Haunted House. The Halloween party was a lot of fun.

Report and photos by Clay Graham / Selah Sweets

On Saturday October 29th, 2016 around 10 AM outdoor enthusiasts met up at the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House in Selah, Washington for the “Oktoberfest Backroads 4×4 Adventure”. We convoyed to the Upper Wenas part of the Wenas Wildlife Area for a backroads run up Cleman Mountain. It was a rainy day.

We aired down at the parking area off Maloy Road and headed up Auduban Road then went up Hog Ranch Road. As we got higher, we found some snow. We continued into the Naches Ranger District onto turn up FS1716 and then onto FS1701 (Bald Mountain Rd.). We onto FS1712 at headed across Cleman Mountain stopping for lunch along the way. After lunch we ran to the east end of the Green Dot Road on Cleman Mountain. We were hoping for a view of the Upper Valley but the clouds were to thick. We back tracked to head off the mountain. Due to the thick fog, we turned down the wrong Green Dot Road and had to go back up and hit the right one on down the ridge (W1100). We aired up at the Hay barn off North Wenas Road and headed back to the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House. This backroads run was fun. The views were not very good due to the clouds.

Back at the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House we had a Oktoberfest potluck.

This was a fun event thanks to all who came.

Upcoming: WDFW hosts meetings on target shooting options for Wenas Wildlife Area

~ PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ~

Wenas Wildlife Area
Wenas Wildlife Area

WDFW NEWS RELEASE
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
600 Capitol Way North, Olympia, WA 98501-1091

http://wdfw.wa.gov/

April 19, 2016

Contact: Cindi Confer Morris, (509) 697-4503

WDFW hosts meetings on target shooting options for Wenas Wildlife Area

YAKIMA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will hold public meetings this month to discuss target shooting options for the Wenas Wildlife Area located between Ellensburg and Yakima. The meetings will focus on the department’s plans to develop designated shooting areas to improve public safety and reduce fire risk while preserving target shooting opportunities at the wildlife area.

The meetings are scheduled for:

  • 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 26, at the Hal Holmes Center, 209 N. Ruby St., Ellensburg.
  • 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, at Selah Middle School, 411 N. First St., Selah.

Unregulated target shooting is a chronic problem throughout the 105,000-acre wildlife area, said WDFW Wildlife Area Manager Cindi Confer Morris. Target shooting at a number of informal locations at the north and south ends of the wildlife area have caused several fires in recent years, endangered public safety and created significant litter issues.

After gathering input from target shooters, residents and wildlife area recreation users at public meetings last year, the department focused on two possible locations to develop a designated shooting range on the south end of the wildlife area.

One possible location is the existing Sheep Company site along Sheep Company Road. The second option, located about a mile north, is the Bull Pasture site.

The agency’s preferred option is development of a shooting range at the Bull Pasture site, which will include:

  • Construction of a 25-yard and 100-yard shooting alley with safety berms;
  • Creation of a shotgun/trap shooting area; and
  • Graveled parking area for 40 vehicles.

Confer Morris said the Bull Pasture site is the agency’s preferred location because it has the greatest potential for reducing fire risk and improving safety for recreational users. Fill material onsite would allow for 20-foot safety berms, making it the more cost-effective site option, she said.

“The visible location of the Bull Pasture site would also help reduce illegal activity and enforcement challenges at the Wildlife Area,” Confer Morris said. “We expect this new location for target shooting would provide a positive environment for shooters of all ages and levels.”

If the department decides to move forward, construction would start early next year.

In addition to developing a new shooting range, the department proposes to:

  • Restrict recreational target shooting to the existing Durr Road West shooting area on the north end of the wildlife area, and the selected site along Sheep Company road on the south end.
  • Close Buffalo Road to motorized access to reduce user conflicts.
  • Maintain fire season shooting restrictions during late spring and summer.

The public meetings will include a presentation with details of the shooting range site options. After the presentation, the public will have the opportunity to provide input to WDFW staff.
More information about the Wenas Wildlife Area is available online at http://wdfw.wa.gov/lands/wildlife_areas/wenas/.
