On Friday June 29th, 2018, volunteers headed from Selah to north of Kittitas, Washington to set up camp for the Eastern Washington Adventures Naneum Ridge State Forest Work Party.

We found a flat place to set up camp on Dawson Cutoff Road. Other volunteers showed that evening.

On Saturday morning, we meet the DNR staff at The Orchard on Coleman Creek Road. Other volunteers also came to help. At 10 AM we headed across the Naneum Ridge State Forest fixing Green Dot Markers and picking up trash. We meet back up at The Orchard with the DNR in the afternoon to load the smaller trash into their truck to haul away. The big items we piled up and gave the location to the DNR staff to pick up later.

Once camp was set up, we decided to take a sightseeing drive. We headed to the Naneum Basin, then up to Wenatchee Mountain, over snow drifts on Naneum ridge Road, and then back to camp. The trip was fun even with cold high winds, but views were not good due to the clouds very low.

On Sunday we headed across the Colockum Wildlife Area to West Bar on the Columbia River. Across the river you could see Crescent Bar. After awhile enjoying the beach, we headed back to camp taking a different route.

This was a very fun weekend thanks to all that came to volunteer. Thank you to all the volunteers, Eastern Washington Adventures Members, Kittitas County Field & Stream members, and the Department of Natural Resources.

Report and photos by Clay Graham / Selah Sweets

On Sunday March 4th, 2018, Eastern Washington Adventures members met up downtown Kittitas, Washington for the annual Eastern Washington Adventures Top Member Challenge.

We convoyed to Colockum Road. We aired down and headed up Colockum Pass to find a good starting point. The snow was soft and deep.

We started the Eastern Washington Adventures Top Member Challenge on top of the ridge at the first power lines. The challenge was the first one to the Halfway Station Marker or the farthest ahead at 3 PM.

We lined up the challenge member rigs. Left to Right; AlwayswrenchN – YJ, James – YJ, and TJ40 – TJ. We had two Jeeps and a side-by-side follow along.

I rode with TJ40, so Guido flagged the start line this year. The challenge started following another groups tracks until Powerline Road. Even following the other groups track, a few of our rigs got stuck along the way. We also pulled out a guy from the other group that was stuck.

Once we had to break trail, it started being Winchfest 2018. The snow was very challenging. James was doing very well for awhile until he got into a real deep soft drift. TJ40 past him and got out front.

AlwayswrenchN was behind for awhile. He caught up and we think he may have taken James’s line. We were a ways ahead stuck when the time hit 3 PM. The Top Member Challenge was over and TJ40 won. He had to winch a few times to get turned around. AlwayswrenchN and Blind Pilot (in the side-by-side) came to help.

We all headed back down the ridge with a few stucks on the way. A the bottom we aired up and headed out. A few of us stopped at the The Tav for dinner.

This was a very fun day thanks to who all came.

On Friday August 4th, 2017, volunteers headed north of Kittitas, Washington to set up camp for the Eastern Washington Adventures Naneum Ridge State Forest Work Party.

We found a flat place to set up camp at the end of Schnebly Canyon Road. Once camp was set up, we decided to take a sightseeing drive. We headed to Walter Flats, then up to Wenatchee Mountain, and then back to camp. The trip was fun, but views were not good due to all the smoke in the air from the fires up north.

On Saturday morning, we meet the DNR staff at The Orchard on Coleman Creek Road. We followed the DNR truck across the Naneum Ridge State Forest fixing Green Dot Markers and picking up trash. Over all, the area was in good shape.

This was a very fun weekend thanks to all that came to volunteer.

On Saturday March 25th, 2017, Eastern Washington Adventures members met up at Curly’s II in Kittitas, Washington for the annual Eastern Washington Adventures Top Member Challenge.

We convoyed to Colockum Road for the Eastern Washington Adventures Top Member Challenge. We stopped and to air down before the climb up the ridge.

We aired down and headed up Colockum Pass to find a good starting point. The snow was very workable to stay on top of as long as you stayed in the center of the road. We started the Eastern Washington Adventures Top Member Challenge on top of the ridge at the first power lines. The challenge was the first one to the Halfway Station Marker. Since there was a small turn out, the two in the challenge voted to let AlwayswrenchN in with tires bigger than 35×12.50.

We lined up the challenge member rigs with mine that was on the hard pack. Left to Right; AlwayswrenchN – YJ, TJ40 with Guido as co-pilot – TJ, the judges Ceg and Ron the Parts Guy – JKU, and Phil – YJ.

We hit a softer snow just past the Powerline Road. There were a few rigs stuck along the way. Only rigs competing could help each other out and being good sports they did.

At the last open area near Halfway Station, I let the guy know the marker was on the other side of the fence. TJ40 had already buried it and Phil did right after. We caught up to AlwayswrenchN to watch him finish the challenge.

AlwayswrenchN went back and pulled Phil out and then TJ40. Everyone came up to Halfway Station and ate lunch. During the break, AlwayswrenchN’s girls came to check out the Halfway Station Marker. One dug it out to read it.

After lunch we headed on down the north slope of Naneum Ridge. We stopped and headed back out at a big off camber snow drift.

This was a very fun day thanks to who all came.

Photos: Eastern Washington Adventures’ New Year’s Snow Wheeling Run

New Year’s Colockum Snow Wheeling Run
Hosted by Eastern Washington Adventures
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Selah Sweets

On Friday January 1st, 2016 some Eastern Washington Adventures Members met up at the EWA Club House in Selah, Washington and then headed to meet the rest at Curly’s III in Kittitas, Washington. Once in Kittitas we head had 7 Jeeps and an Early Bronco for the annual New Year’s Day Wheeling Run.

Around 10 AM we convoyed to Colockum Road and aired down at the parking area near the edge of the forest.

We moved on up Colockum Road following a group from Off-Camber.com. The snow was mostly powder and did not pack well. Even running 5 PSI and following the tire tracks of the other group, it was hard to stay on top of the snow.

We caught up to the Off-Camber group at the intersection of Powerline Road. We watch them fight the deep powder snow for awhile and then they had decided to back track Colockum Road. They went around our group giving us a chance to play in the deep stuff.

Three of us pushed on making new tracks but did not get much farther. I believe the other two rigs got stuck at times but I wasn’t paying attention due to getting stuck myself. I dropped to 3.5 PSI and was able to push on enough to really get stuck. Doug tried to give me a pull backwards. My rig did not move and his got stuck too. Doug used his winch to pull his rig toward mine so we could remove the recovery strap. Once he was loose, he backed up and winched me out. Shortly after that, we decided to head back down the mountain.

The trip back out was another adventure. The powder snow stuck a few rigs and a few tires lost their beads. The worst part was when we found a small skinny tire Green CJ stuck way off the road. The guys got stuck and decided to winch to some trees away from the road. We are not sure what they were thinking. The guys in our group shoveled and winched the CJ back on the road. Friends of the guys in the Green CJ showed up about that time and stuck their rig which our group ended up having to help out too.

Now everyone is back on the road and we are moving again. Well that did not last long. The Green CJ just could not stay on top of the snow with the skinny small tires. Long story short is, there were many repeats of the Green CJ getting stuck. I am not sure how the Green CJ got that far up the mountain in the first place.

We finely got to the bottom where we had aired down that morning. We aired up and headed back to Kittitas. Some of us stopped and head dinner at Curly’s III before heading home.

This was a very fun event and a great day.

Thank you to all the Eastern Washington Adventures Club Members and guest that worked so hard getting these unprepared guys down out of the mountains along with the many other over the years. It seems to happen to often.
