On Saturday October 28th, 2017 around 10 AM outdoor enthusiasts met up at the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House in Selah, Washington for the “Halloween Backroads 4×4 Adventure”. We convoyed to the Upper Wenas part of the Wenas Wildlife Area for a backroads run up Cleman Mountain.

We aired down at the Hay barn off North Wenas Road and headed up W1100. At the top of Cleman Mountain we ran the the ridge Southeast to the end of the Green Dot where we stopped for lunch.

After lunch we back tracked past where we came up and ran the top of Cleman Mountain Northwest. We continued into the Naches Ranger District onto FS1712 and ran it to FS1701 (Bald Mountain Rd.). At FS1701 we took a break and said goodby to the people in tow of the rigs that had to head back over to Western Washington for work.

We turn up FS1701, took FS1716 and then turn on Hog Ranch Road to go back toward North Wenas Road. We aired up at the parking area off Maloy Road. Most people headed back home and a few came to the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House.

This backroads run was fun. The views were great even though it was a little hazy at times in the distance.

Back at the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House we had a potluck and Halloween Party. Some of the kids played in the Haunted House. The Halloween party was a lot of fun.

On Saturday October 29th, 2016 around 10 AM outdoor enthusiasts met up at the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House in Selah, Washington for the “Oktoberfest Backroads 4×4 Adventure”. We convoyed to the Upper Wenas part of the Wenas Wildlife Area for a backroads run up Cleman Mountain. It was a rainy day.

We aired down at the parking area off Maloy Road and headed up Auduban Road then went up Hog Ranch Road. As we got higher, we found some snow. We continued into the Naches Ranger District onto turn up FS1716 and then onto FS1701 (Bald Mountain Rd.). We onto FS1712 at headed across Cleman Mountain stopping for lunch along the way. After lunch we ran to the east end of the Green Dot Road on Cleman Mountain. We were hoping for a view of the Upper Valley but the clouds were to thick. We back tracked to head off the mountain. Due to the thick fog, we turned down the wrong Green Dot Road and had to go back up and hit the right one on down the ridge (W1100). We aired up at the Hay barn off North Wenas Road and headed back to the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House. This backroads run was fun. The views were not very good due to the clouds.

Back at the Eastern Washington Adventures Club House we had a Oktoberfest potluck.

This was a fun event thanks to all who came.

Photos: 2014 PNW4WDA Region 4 “Pick Up A Mountain“

Pick Up A Mountain
Hosted by PNW4WDA Region 4.
Report by Clay Graham. Photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

Every year on the third weekend of September, Region 4 of the Pacific Northwest 4 Wheel Drive Association holds a big event at Jim Sprick Park to pick up trash in the surrounding mountains of the Naches Drainage.

People started setting up camp Friday afternoon. By the night the park had many people there camping.

Saturday September 20th, 2014 the day started with a driver’s meeting at 8 AM.

Around 8:30 AM we took a group photo of the rigs and headed out to clean up the mountains.

Our group Eastern Washington Adventures and Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 headed up FS1701 which is across the road from Jim Sprick Park. We stopped just past the intersection of FS1701 & 4W670 to help Ron Rutherford’s group close a illegal mudding area on WDFW managed land. Oak Creek Wildlife Area Manager Ross Huffman was there to help.

Next we ran to the end of FS1701 and turned up 4W694. We picked up trash along the way. We took a lunch break at the Manastash Lake View Point. After lunch we continued on 4W694. We picked up some trash at Funny Rocks. At 4W695 we turned up it and stopped to pick up trash at Moon Rocks. Next we headed down 4W695 and turned back onto FS1701. We ran FS530 up to Bald Mountain and took 4W675 down. We ran FS1702 back down to SR410 then ran back over to Jim Sprick Park.

Around 4:30 PM the games started for the Junior Jeepers along with the Corn Shucking Contest. Lisa Graham won the Corn Shucking Contest this year. This is the second year a member of Eastern Washington Adventures Club won. After all the corn was shucked and cooked, the potluck dinner began. Next was the raffle. There were many great raffle prizes. After the raffle the DJ played music and some danced.

On Sunday Region 4 had a free breakfast for the volunteers. The Eastern Washington Adventures Club, Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 and few other volunteers cooked breakfast.

PNW4WDA Region 4 wants to thank all who helped make this event work, thank you to all the volunteers that picked up trash and thank you to all that donated.

Photos: EWOR Father’s Day 4×4 Camp Out on Manastash Ridge

Father’s Day Weekend Camp-out & 4×4 Run on Manastash Ridge
Hosted by Eastern Washington Off Road
Report by Clay Graham. Photos by Clay & Hank Graham / Eastern Washington Off Road

On Friday June 13th, 2008, we headed up FS1701 to set up camp at the FS1701-530 intersection for the Eastern Washington Off Road Father’s Day Weekend Camp-out & 4×4 Run on Manastash Ridge.

Saturday morning most of the people showed up at camp and others were planning to met us up at Funny Rocks. Around 10 AM we headed on FS1701 and turn on 4W694. We stopped for a break at the Manastash Lake Viewpoint on the way to Funny Rocks.

At Funny Rocks we met with the others and then headed out turning onto 4W695. We had a hard time getting some of the rigs through the snow around Moon Rocks. We drove through Moon Rocks and headed down toward FS1701. At the creek crossing we hit a lot of deep snow in the trees. Again it was a challenge to get through the deep snow covered area. At the tree line, I had to cut a down tree off of the trail to get through. We made it down to FS1701 at ran it back to camp.

After a break at camp, we headed up FS1701-530 and went across Bald Mountain to 4W644. As we got into the trees where the trail started down hill, the snow was deep and off camber. I started down through that area and slid sideways on the off camber snow and came very close to hitting a tree. I made it around and then Test Dummy did the same thing. Everyone behind him decided they didn’t want to try it. We were to committed to change our minds. We told the others we would meet them back at Moon Rocks and we continued down.

Test Dummy and I had a great time working the rigs, trying not to hit the tree on the downhill slope. We keep falling through the snow were water was running underneath. With some winching and pulling we made it down to the bottom and out of the snow. We could not put through the snow going uphill on 4W644A to get the Moon Rocks. We had to run 4W644 out to 4W694, then onto 4W695 to get to Moon Rocks. We made it there before the other part of our group.

Once everyone was at Moon Rocks, we headed back out 4W695, onto 4W694 and then down 4W686 to FS1708. Most headed for home and the rest of us head back to camp.

On Sunday Blind-Pilot came up to camp for the day’s run. I drove our family XJ, my wife drove her Tweety Jeep, Test Dummy had his XJ, and Blind-Pilot had a TJ. The ran FS1701-530 up to where the Bald Mountain Lookout once stood for the view. Next we ran back down and turned on 4W966. We ran 4W966 to FS1702 and down to SR410. We turned on SR410 and headed toward Little Naches. My XJ had a bad case of death wobble from the tires we had just put on. We stopped at Gold Creek Restaurant to see what was wrong with the XJ. Test Dummy pulled some weights off the front rims and we were on our way again. That helped a lot.

We turned onto NF19 and then went up FS1902 toward Raven Roost. We pasted the Peak Putters coming down. They pointed out my XJ’s rear shocks were hanging. The top bolts had pulled out. We headed on up to the snow level. The ruts were deep and my XJ tires were not great. We turned around and headed back down. We did some exploring campgrounds in the area and headed out. We stopped off at Whistlin’ Jack’s before going back to camp to get our tow rig.

This was a great Father’s Day weekend thanks to all who came.
